Dual Immersion
Lake Norman Elementary is home to DUAL IMMERSION – SPANISH!!
This program launched at Lake Norman Elementary August of 2017 and has been a great success! Each year we offer our program to 100 kindergarten students. These seats will be filled on a first come, first served basis. These 100 students will continue the program through fifth grade at Lake Norman Elementary and then through middle and high school. Any empty seats in grades other than Kindergarten will be filled from a wait list with preference given to Spanish speaking families.

Definition
A dual language program allows students from two different language backgrounds to receive academic instruction in two languages--English and Spanish. The goal is to develop literacy (read, write and speak) in both languages. This program began at Lake Norman Elementary in August, 2017 and intends to expand to K-5, eventually making up 50% of our classrooms school-wide.
How It Works
In the first year, approximately 90% of the core curriculum (reading, writing, math, science, social studies) is taught in Spanish and 10% in English. In the grades following kindergarten, students follow an A/B rotation each day. On Day A, students receive all core academic instruction in Spanish. On Day B, students receive all core academic instruction in English. This results in approximately a 50/50 split of English and Spanish instruction.
Kindergarten - 90% Spanish and 10% English.
First through Fifth Grade - 50% Spanish and 50% English (A/B day rotation).
Staff
Highly qualified, native Spanish speaking teachers will serve as the classroom teachers. The teacher will be bilingual, but instruction in the first year will be done entirely in Spanish. Each classroom will also include a bilingual teacher assistant. In first grade, students will have two teachers. One teacher will be a Spanish speaking teacher for A Day and the B Day teacher will be one of our existing English speaking teachers. Enhancement classes (Art, PE, Music and STEM) will be taught in English by our current staff.
Benefits
Research shows that students in dual language programs develop strong academic skills in addition to becoming proficient in both languages. Bilingual students have the opportunity to develop a deeper level of proficiency in both English and Spanish. Acquiring a second language enhances cognitive development and problem-solving skills. Bilingual students gain a competitive edge in the workforce and an appreciation of other cultures. Language immersion may sound unrealistic; however, this approach has been highly effective across the country. The results are truly remarkable!
